EFFI & PYM
The Museum of Old Maps, MNHCV headquarters on Londra Str. 39, Bucharest,
20/09 – 23/10/2022
Beatrice von Babel is a flexible organism, composed of autonomous creators and performers, whose actions temporarily overlap, in various architectural and mental spaces, intimate maps and individual paths. Divergences and similarities constantly reconfigure the dating network. This international creative body produced the exhibition and event series “Under the Boat”, realized between April 20 and May 20, 2022 in the Sala del Camino in Giudecca, Venice, in collaboration with the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation ; the exhibition – event inserted a living artistic environment into the local community , with photo, audio, sculpture, installation, painting, performance works that metamorphosed daily and always kept the public’s attention awake.
Arriving from Venice to Bucharest, Beatrice von Babel brings with her a type of multimedia and plural exhibition experience, which accommodates installation, object, painting, movement, sound, poetry, in the Venetian-style villa of the National Museum of Old Maps and Books. The exhibition from the temporary space continues in the perimeter of the museum’s permanent collection, outlining a course of travel based on intimate expectations and desires, confronted with concrete realities and requirements. The most different routes, however, have a common map: that of man traversing the world.
The exhibition – event Effi / Pym at the Museum of Maps is inspired by a graft between the aristocratic-dramatic figure of Effi Briest from Theodore Fontane’s novel and the adventurous-fantasy sailor Gordon Pym from EA Poe’s novel. This fusion evokes imaginary and mental welds that transcend geographical and temporal coordinates, to outline the possible maps of very real and intimate synesthetic territories, impossible to formulate otherwise than artistically.
Sculptures, fabrics, installations, painting, photography, video, acoustic works and instrumental, vocal and electronic music, performances and actions will be exhibited at the Museum of Maps, alternatively and cumulatively.
